But before the packing lists and visa details, there is one thing worth saying first.

Right Expectations

A yoga teacher training in India is not a holiday. It is also not a boot camp. It sits somewhere in between, structured and demanding, but also deeply rewarding in ways that are difficult to describe until you have lived them. At Rishikul Yogshala Rishikesh, a typical training day begins at 5:30 in the morning and ends around 7:30 in the evening. In between, you will practise asana, learn pranayama, sit in philosophy and anatomy classes, study teaching methodology, and spend quiet time with yourself and your batchmates on the banks of the Ganga.

It is a lot. It is also exactly what most students say they needed.

Over 25,000 students from more than 80 countries have prepared for and completed their yoga teacher training with us since 2010, including beginners who had never stood in front of a class, experienced practitioners returning for advanced training, solo female travellers arriving in India for the first time, and students in their 40s and 50s doing something they had been thinking about for decades. What every single one of them had in common was this: they were not entirely sure they were ready. And every single one of them was.

You do not need to be flexible. You do not need years of practice behind you. You need an open mind, a willingness to be uncomfortable for a few days while you settle in, and a genuine desire to learn. The rest, Rishikesh, takes care of.

This guide will walk you through everything, step by step. Read it once now, save it, and come back to it as your departure date gets closer.

Prepare Your Body and Mind Before You Arrive

The training runs 6 days a week from 5:30 AM to 7:30 PM. A little preparation before you arrive makes a real difference to how quickly you settle in.

Physical Preparation (4 Weeks Before Arrival)
  • Practise yoga daily at home; even 30 minutes a day helps
  • Focus on basics: Sun Salutations, Tadasana, Balasana, Adho Mukha Svanasana
  • Work on hip openers and shoulder mobility; these get challenged most in the early days
  • Start waking up earlier and adjust your body to the 5:30 AM schedule gradually
  • Do not overdo it before arrival; rest is more valuable than extra practice
Mental Preparation
  • Start a simple 10-minute daily meditation; sitting quietly is a skill that develops fast
  • Let go of expectations around flexibility or performance; it is not a competition
  • Be ready for emotional moments; they happen to almost everyone and are part of the process
Lifestyle — 2 to 4 Weeks Before Arrival
  • Reduce caffeine gradually; the schedule does not include coffee
  • Start eating lighter, simpler meals; sattvic food adjustment is easier if you prepare
  • Reduce alcohol; your body will thank you in the first week
  • Sleep earlier, and the 5:30 AM start becomes natural within a few days

What to Expect on Your First Day at Rishikul Yogshala

The first day is not what most students expect. There is no pressure, no assessment, no test of how flexible you are. It is designed to help you settle in, meet your batchmates, and understand what the next few weeks will look like.

Here is what your first day looks like:

6th of the Month Arrival and Check-In
  • You will be welcomed by our team and shown to your room
  • Take time to settle in, unpack, and rest, especially if you have travelled a long distance
7th of the Month Orientation Session
  • A full walkthrough of the daily schedule, campus rules, and meal timings
  • Teachers introduce themselves and explain their subject areas
  • Your course kit, including study materials and textbooks, will be handed to you
  • A chance to ask any questions before training begins
7th of the Month, Post 2 PM Opening Ceremony
  • The training begins with a traditional puja at the school
  • Most students wear their white outfit for this; it marks the beginning of the journey in a meaningful way
  • You will meet your teachers and the full batch for the first time
First Evening
  • A light introductory yoga or meditation session, nothing intense
  • Special dinner together as a group
  • Early to bed: your first 5:30 AM morning starts the next day
One Honest Note:

The first two to three days are an adjustment for almost everyone. By day four, most students feel completely at home.

Cultural Etiquette in Rishikesh — What to Know Before You Arrive

Rishikesh is a spiritual town with a culture that is warm, welcoming, and respectful. A little awareness goes a long way in making your experience richer and more meaningful.

Dress Modestly Outside Campus
  • Cover shoulders and knees when stepping outside the school
  • Loose cotton trousers, long skirts, and light shawls work perfectly
  • This is a sign of respect, not a strict rule, but locals appreciate it deeply
Remove Shoes
  • Always remove footwear before entering the yoga hall, temples, and most common areas
  • Slip-on sandals or flip-flops make this easy throughout the day
The Ganga is Sacred
  • Treat the river with respect; avoid loud behaviour, littering, or disrespectful conduct near the riverbank
  • Early morning and evening aarti on the Ganga is one of the most beautiful experiences in Rishikesh; attend it at least once
Photography
  • Always ask permission before photographing locals, sadhus, or inside temples
  • Most people are happy to oblige when asked respectfully
General Conduct
  • Greet people with 'Namaste'; it is always appreciated
  • Bargaining is normal in local markets; do it with a smile
  • Public displays of affection are not common in Rishikesh; keep this in mind outside the campus

Recommended Reading Before You Arrive

You do not need to read anything before your course begins; all study materials are provided. But if you want a head start, these books will give you a solid foundation and a deeper appreciation of what you are about to experience.

For Yoga Philosophy
  • The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali – The foundational text of classical yoga. Even a basic introduction version is valuable
  • The Bhagavad Gita – One of the most important texts in yogic philosophy. Any good translation works well for beginners
  • Light on Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar – The most comprehensive guide to asana ever written
For Inspiration and Context
  • Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda – Possibly the most widely read spiritual book in the world. Many students say this is what made them book their course
  • The Heart of Yoga by T.K.V. Desikachar - Practical, warm, and deeply insightful
For India and Rishikesh
  • India: A Sacred Geography by Diana Eck – helps you understand the spiritual landscape of the country you are visiting

You do not need to finish any of these before arriving. Even 20 pages of one book can change your perspective on Day 1.

Frequently Asked Questions - How to Prepare for Yoga Teacher Training in India

Q.How fit do I need to be before joining yoga teacher training in India?

Ans. You do not need to be flexible. A basic daily yoga practice in the weeks before arrival is helpful. The training itself builds your strength and stamina progressively from day one. For more queries, call us at +91-8433225327, or email us at contact@rishikulyogshalarishikesh.com

Q.How early should I arrive in India before the course starts?

Ans. Check-in at Rishikul Yogshala is on the 6th of every batch month. If it is your first time in India, arriving a day earlier in Delhi gives your body time to rest and adjust before the journey to Rishikesh.

Q.Is it safe to drink tap water in Rishikesh?

Ans. No — always drink filtered or bottled water. Filtered drinking water is available on campus at all times. Carry your reusable bottle and refill it throughout the day.

Q.Will I have free time during the training?

Ans. Yes. One full rest day per week is built into the schedule. Most students use it to explore Rishikesh, sit by the Ganga, or simply sleep in. There is also personal study time built into each day.

Q.Can I keep my phone during training?

Ans. Yes, there are no phone restrictions. That said, most students find themselves naturally stepping away from screens as the weeks go on; the schedule keeps you busy, and Rishikesh does the rest.

Q.What if I get sick during the training?

Ans. Mild digestive adjustment or tiredness in the first few days is common and passes quickly. Rishikesh has clinics and pharmacies close by, and our team is always available to help if you need anything during your stay.

Q.Can I follow a special diet during training?

Ans. Three sattvic vegetarian meals are served daily. If you have specific dietary requirements or allergies, let us know before you arrive, and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Q.How much spending money do I need?

Ans. Most students get by comfortably on $10 to $20 USD per day for personal expenses, chai, snacks, local shopping, and rest-day outings. Your accommodation and three meals are already covered in your course fee.

Q.Is there a language barrier in Rishikesh?

Ans. Not at all. English is widely spoken around Ram Jhula, where our school is based. All classes, study materials, and day-to-day communication at Rishikul Yogshala are in English.

Q.What happens if I need to leave early or miss classes?

Ans. Let our team know as soon as possible. Yoga Alliance certification requires a minimum attendance to receive your certificate; our teachers will sit with you and work out the best path forward depending on your situation.

We Love to Hear From You

We will revert you as soon as possible. If you have not heard from us within 24 hours, please email us at contact@rishikulyogshalarishikesh.com.
